About the tulsi and the lamp
Tulsi, or holy basil, is often planted in the courtyards of Hindu homes. In the month of Kartik, lighting a lamp each evening is part of the observance, and the tulsi plant is worshipped as part of it. The Tulsi Vivah festival falls between Prabodhini Ekadashi and Kartik Purnima. These are matters of religious tradition and are not guaranteed to give any result. Customs differ by region and family, so use the diya in the way your tradition or pandit advises.
Safe use and care
A lit diya and the brass around it get hot, so place it on a stable, level, heat-safe surface, keep the flame away from the tulsi leaves, curtains, paper and cloth, and keep it out of the reach of children and pets. Do not leave a burning lamp without someone at home. Use ghee or oil with a cotton wick, as your tradition suggests. After use, let the brass cool, wipe away oil with a soft cloth and keep it dry. Polish gently, if at all, to protect the antique finish.
