About the tortoise in tradition
In Hindu mythology the tortoise is linked with Kurma, the tortoise form of Lord Vishnu, who carried Mount Mandara on his back when the gods and demons churned the ocean. In Vastu belief the tortoise is seen as a symbol of long life and stability, and a metal tortoise is often kept in a plate or bowl, with some people placing it towards the north. In Chinese tradition the tortoise is a symbol of longevity, and the Black Tortoise is one of the four symbols that guards the north. These are matters of belief and tradition, they are not scientifically proven, and no wealth, health or other result is promised. Customs differ by region and family, so place it as your tradition or Vastu consultant advises, or simply enjoy it as a decorative piece.
Use and care
Place it on a stable, level surface. Wipe the brass with a soft dry cloth, and polish it with a brass cleaner as per that cleaner's directions if you like a brighter shine, taking care around the carved detail. It is a decorative item and is not for food or for the mouth. Keep it out of the reach of young children.
